The Hamble Classics Regatta is owned and organised by Solent sailors Jonty Sherwill and Vicki Weston who sail together aboard Jonty's classic 1926 21 foot wooden dayboat Cockleshell built in St.Peter Port Guernsey.

“Why don’t we organise our own classic regatta?” said Vicki Weston as
Cockleshell cruised home from a Cowes event in 2015 and her comment set in motion the development of the Hamble Classics Regatta that a year later would attract sixty-five classic yachts including its star entry, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston with his round-the-world yacht Suhaili.

Vicki was brought up in Malta and as a youngster cruised to Italy and Sicily aboard friends' yachts. After coming to England in 1984 and starting a family she continued to sail extensively including crewing aboard a competitive Sigma 33, owning a Firefly class racing dinghy, and later on helped a friend complete a circumnavigation of the British Isles in a 30-footer.

Jonty has wide experience of racing modern and classic yachts including his own classic dayboat, a family heirloom he took over in 1983. With yacht design and journalistic experience and as one of the Concours d'Elegance judging team at the 150th America's Cup Jubilee in 2001 he is well placed to develop and direct the Hamble Classics, the first dedicated classic yacht regatta to be based in the River Hamble. His knowledge of classic boats both large and small is extensive and has included racing aboard
Mariette, Mariquita, Tuiga and the 8-Metre Athena all in the space of one week!

After careful planning the inaugural Hamble Classics Regatta was hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club in 2016 and was a resounding success with 65 beautiful classics yachts entered. Since then 120 different boats have attended the event over the three years, some returning for the intense but well-spirited racing and others simply to enjoy the fun, and in 2018 twenty boats were new to the event.

Speaking about the relocation to the RAF Yacht Club Jonty Sherwill commented: “After three years of the Hamble Classics being hosted at the Royal Southern Yacht Club Vicki and I decided the time was right to involve other yacht clubs and businesses on the River Hamble, reflecting the true and inclusive spirit of the event as we stated from the outset. We are looking forward to working with the RAF Yacht Club team and our thanks go to the Royal Southern Yacht Club for their support in previous years."
